When season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale drew to a close last year the series left fans wondering what was coming next. After all their hero June (Elisabeth Moss), who was on the verge of escaping, decided to stay in Gilead. And that was it. Light’s down, roll the credits. The series had gone past the novel all ready too, which meant there could be no spoilers or expectations. Ever since then fans have been patiently waiting for any news as to when the show would return. They got that information in March, when it was announced that June 5 would be the release date, but other than a few quick shots in a teaser trailer, nothing else was known. Until now. Hulu has released a full on trailer for the upcoming season, and it looks like it won’t disappoint fans.
By the looks of things, season 3 sees June return to her roll as a Handmaid, while starting to set up a rebellion against her oppressors. “If I’m going to change things, I’m going to need allies: Allies with power,” June says in the trailer. Who those allies are isn’t clear, but images of Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) flash onscreen. Both do have reasons for joining the cause, but they could just be red herrings and have nothing to do with it at all. Also seen in the trailer are June’s lover Nick (Max Minghella) and her friend who did escape Moira (Samira Wily) as well as one of her foes Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).
Whether June will succeed to free herself and her fellow handmaids from their government is yet to be seen. With a new novel by Margaret Atwood coming out in the fall though, don’t expect this series to wrap up neatly by the end. It will more than likely get renewed for a season 4.
