In an announcement made by Twitter this morning, the social media platform has decided to change up the favourite icon to a heart. The company says “The heart, in contrast, is a universal symbol that resonates across languages, cultures, and time zones. The heart is more expressive, enabling you to convey a range of emotions and easily connect with people.” in a blog post.
Twitter has made the change as they believe that it will make Twitter easier and more rewarding to use: “We know that at times the star could be confusing, especially to newcomers. You might like a lot of things, but not everything can be your favorite.”
The usage of the heart icon also brings some consistency – with Periscope already using hearts to represent likes. Twitter has said that both Twitter and Vine will make use of the heart icon to represent liking something.
However, it’s not all love and hearts among the Twitter community as many users have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction at the change. A user has even created a Chrome extension to bring back the old star icon, while another has decided to change the icon to the poop emoji.
HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO POLITELY END CONVERSATIONS WITHOUT A FAVOURITE BUTTON?

I work at @twitter but even I can’t believe how insensitive to irony some folks in the media can be.

Oh, and there are a couple of Twitter users that have decided to call the new feature ‘gay’, or that it will make them gay, or it makes Twitter gay. Why? Because they are fucking idiots with too much time on their hands.
#MasculinitySoFragile guys can’t like a tweet with a heart on it because it threatens their sexuality pic.twitter.com/IJWTWnwtkS
