It’s about to be a beautiful day in the neighbourhood once again, as Oscar winner Tom Hanks has been cast as the legendary children’s TV host Fred Rogers for an upcoming biopic.

Mister Rogers Neighborhood ran from 1968 to 2001, although it did originate in Canada on CBC as Mr. Rogers from 1963-1966. The children’s series was one of the most popular to air during its time, and it made Fred Rogers a household name. The film, called You Are My Friend, was picked up by TriStar, who announced yesterday that Tom Hanks had signed on to play the role. The film is directed by Marielle Heller.

You Are My Friend follow the story of a cynical journalist who is given the assignment of writing a profile piece on Rogers, and he finds his life transformed by the experience. The story follows the real-life friendship between Rogers and journalist Tom Junod.

Director Heller stated in a released statement that “I’m thrilled to be making You Are My Friend. The script knocked me out with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit. As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and as a human I am in awe of his life’s work. I can’t wait to bring his story to the public and be a part of such a thoughtful, smart group of people who are all coming together to make this film, which truly feels to me like an antidote to our very fractured culture.”

No release date has been given as of yet, but it’s one we will be keeping our eyes on.
