Year after year, the Critic’s Choice awards reflect how the Oscar votes go, so odds are pretty good that The Favourite will be among the most nominated films at next year’s show.

The Favourite is a period comedy starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, and it takes place in 18th century England. It follows the story of a frail Queen Anne (Colman) whose close friend Lady Sarah (Weisz) rules in her stead, and Sarah’s relationship with a new servant named Abigail (Stone). The film is up for Best Picture, Best Comedy, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay as well as individual acting nominations for the three leads and Best Ensemble.

Coming in at a close second with 12 nominations was the superhero film Black Panther. Among it’s nominations were Best Picture, Best Action Movie, Best Supporting Actor and Best Ensemble. The film is hoping to receive a Best Picture nomination at next year’s Oscars, and it’s looking like it might just be able to get that after this impressive showing. Ryan Gosling’s First Man was also a popular film for nominations, even though the film didn’t do so well at the box office, receiving 10 of them, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

Vice and A Star Is Born each had nine nominations. Vice received the most nominations last week for the upcoming Golden Globe awards, and again is highly favoured to come away with several awards. It’s up for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Comedy Actor, Best Supporting Actress. A Star Is Born had five Golden Globe nominations last week, and received Critics Choice nominations for Best Actor, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Song.

On the TV side of things, it was the Ben Stiller-directed prison series Escape at Dannemora and The Assassination of Gianni Versace that lead the pack with five nominations apiece. The Americans. Sky Atlantic and Sharp Objects came in with four nominations each.

The Critics Choice Awards will be handed out on January 13.
