Production has already begun in Toronto on the upcoming Saw reboot, and now it’s been announced that Samuel L. Jackson has joined Chris Rock as one of the stars of the film.
Details of the plot of the Saw reboot are being kept closely under wraps, but it is known that Rock will play a police detective who is investigating a series of grizzly murders, and that Jackson will play his father. Max Minghella will play Rock’s character’s partner. It’s also known that Riverdale actress Marisol Nichols is playing a police captain. Other than that, very little details have been released, but Lionsgate is saying that the film will “offer deviously treacherous traps, clever clues and the edge-of-the-seat suspense that fans expect.” It is also unknown if the film will involved antagonist John Kramer, who was known as the Jigsaw Killer, or if it will follow the story of a new villain.
From 2004 to 2010 a new Saw film was released every year, but unfortunately, like most long-running film series, Saw’s plot started getting convoluted and silly and the films started making less and less money as they went on. After a seven year hiatus, a seventh film, titled Jigsaw, was released, and it went on to earn over $100 million.
The Saw reboot will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed the first three sequels to the original film. Chris Rock was the driving force behind the rebooted franchise, which was inspired by his love of the series. The original films have grossed almost $1 billion worldwide.
Saw is scheduled to be released on October 23, 2020.
