From Vampire to Bat, Robert Pattinson is said to have signed on to play The Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film chronicling the Dark Knight’s early exploits.

When Ben Affleck stepped down from the role of Bruce Wayne / Batman after the Justice League movie, Warner Bros. quickly started looking for his replacement. It was said that Matt Reeves, who had been given the job of writing and directing the next solo Batman film, was looking for an actor between 25 and 33 years old. Pattinson was rumoured to be a favourite to land the role, and with his age being right on 33, he was within the range Reeves was looking for. Other actors said to be in the mix included Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Armie Hammer. The only thing that could possibly nix the deal, is if Pattinson is unwilling, or unable to sign a multi-picture deal.

Pattinson was first seen on the big screen in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire where he played the doomed character Cedric Diggory, but it wasn’t until he scored the role of Edward Cullen in 2008’s Twilight that he truly shot to fame. Over the last few years Pattinson has shied a little bit from the spotlight, taking mostly indie roles and less commercial ones, but he has signed on for the as of yet to be titled Christopher Nolan film that is set for a summer 2020 release and will start filming soon.

Reeves is set to start pre-production of The Batman this summer, with a June 25, 2021 release date. He wrote the script and will be directing it, but as of yet not much is known about it. It is expected to be the first film in a trilogy though.

Comic book fans have already started chirping online about the selection, as is to be expected. Pattinson after all is seen more of a heartthrob than a decent actor, with most only looking at him for his role in Twilight which was meant more for female audiences. There was a lot of displeasure at the casting of Heath Ledger as Joker for 2008’s The Dark Knight as well, but once they finally saw him on the big screen in the role they had a hard time picturing anyone else playing the character. Perhaps Pattinson will surprise fans the way Ledger did, or maybe he won’t, only time will tell.
