In some cases in nature things happen that seem too great to be true, perfect coincidences that clearly illustrate the appeal and marvel of the world around us.

One such episode took place over the Costa Brava, in Northeastern Spain, when a mass of starlings started to gather into a shape-shifting cloud, called a murmuration. This phenomenon is a real phenomenon, with hundreds, often thousands or more birds moving and twisting in what appears to be a coordinated, single organism that can quickly morph into some stunning shapes.

Photographer Daniel Biber from Hilzingen, Germany existed when the starlings began to swirl and twist, most likely the outcome of a predator such as a falcon or hawk remaining in the vicinity. It was nearly supernatural that in action to the predator, the cloud of starlings wound up weaving themselves into a giant, single bird, as if to say to their tormentor, “we are larger than you.”

The photos have made Mr. Biber a reward in an international photography competition, however he didn’t understand that he had recorded such distinct shots until later. “Just when I inspected the pictures on the computer later, I understood what formation the starlings had actually produced,” he informed the Daily Mail.” I was so focused on taking photos at the time that I had not understood that the starlings

had developed a huge bird in the sky. “It was a case of patience pays off for Mr. Biber, who had tried and cannot capture the starlings in full circulation before. “‘I’ve aimed to photo the starlings but it never exercised along with I hoped for,” he said. “‘I eventually drove to the area every day for four days in a row in order to catch them. I picked an area where I thought they would turn up and selected a coordinating foreground and background in order to put them in scene.”
