Audiences have been wondering for a long time if Netflix would ever release their movies theatrically. After all some of their biggest hits would look phenomenal on the big screen. Earlier this year their film Outlaw King, which premieres on Netflix this Friday, opened TIFF, and looked great. Now it appears if they are starting to gauge how much interest there would be from fans of the streaming service to pay money to watch other films at the theatre instead of in the comfort of their own home.

Netflix announced yesterday that Andy Serkis’ Mowgli: Legend Of The Jungle would be making its way to theatres starting November 29.While at the moment it is set to be just a limited release in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and London, this could very well pave the way for future releases. The film is set to be launched globally on Netflix on December 7th.

Mowgli is a new take on the Rudyard Kipling classic The Jungle Book, and features a combination of CGI and live action. Rohan Chand plays Mowgli, with Andy Serkis playing Baloo the bear. It follows the young Mowgli as he tries to find his place in the world, and tries to decide whether he wants to stay in the jungle with his animal friends, or take his place among civilized men.  The cast also includes Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Freida Pinto, Matthew Rhys, and Naomie Harris.

If Mowgli is successful in its limited release, you can expect to see more Netflix films receive a similar treatment, or even given a wide release before heading to the streaming service.
