Netflix Begs Viewers To Stop The Bird Box Challenge

While people doing idiotic things for a laugh or to get their fifteen minutes of fame is nothing new (heck, Jackass ran for three seasons on MTV and spawned three hit movies), it seems like people are somehow getting dumber and are willing to do more and more dangerous things. The latest is based on the Netflix film Bird Box, and has people blindfolding themselves and seeing if they can do normal, everyday tasks while they can’t see. Netflix has taken it upon themselves to plead with fans of the Sandra Bullock film to stop it.

The streaming giant posted yesterday on Twitter, stating “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”

In the film Sandra Bullock and her two children in the film who go by the names Boy and Girl throughout most of it, wear blindfolds to avoid seeing the supernatural entity that forces people who see them to commit suicide. They do everything from walking around, to riding a raft down rapids and even shooting a gun without having the ability to see. The #BirdBoxChallenge meme has people wearing blindfolds themselves and doing everyday tasks as well, with some being more successful than others. One of the more popular videos has a man walking blindfolded with a baby that he leads right into a wall. Some people are trying to drive without being able to see, like some of the characters in the film. A popular YouTuber by the name of Morgan Adams even attempted to go blindfolded for 24 hours. Netflix of course doesn’t like what they are seeing, hence the pleading Tweet.

Bird Box was streamed more than 45 million times during it’s debut week, which is a record for the network.
