What’s next for Samsung? “Relentless innovation,” according to its mobile head, JK Shin, at the company’s press conference at this year’s Mobile World Congress as it announced two new smartphones jammed-packed with top-notch specs and “first-of-its-kind technology” – the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge.
The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge sees a radical overhaul of its design. The body is no longer made out of plastic, adopting metal and glass like its rivals and give it a more “premium device” aesthetic – something you could not say with its predecessor. The Galaxy S6 Edge, as its name suggests, will feature a curved display on both sides. It also took a playful dig at Apple, saying the phone will not bend.
Hardware-wise, both phones feature a 5.1-inch display, 3GB of RAM, and an “octacore” processor (or two processors, 2.1GHz quad-core and a 1.5GHz quad-core). It will come in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB storage capacities; also comes with wireless charging support in-built.
Samsung also says that they have changed the cameras, promising to be “incredibly vivid, bright and fast”. Both the front-facing 5MP and rear 16MP camera, according to them, should provide the most superior image quality, even in low-light situations. Other additions include auto real-time HDR, and smart optical image stablisation. We will have to wait and see until we get our hands on it to see if it holds up, but I hope it is far better than the Galaxy S5.
On the software front, the user interface gets a massive revamp with an emphasis on usability and functionality. Based on the press conference, Samsung hasn’t made many tweaks and uses more of Google’s new design language on Lollipop. It looks like Touch-Wiz is dead, and I bet many people will be pleased with that.
It also includes its new Samsung Pay, its new payment system which will launch in the US and South Korea later in the year. What is interesting is that it plans to incorporate both NFC and Magnetic Secure Transmission – which lets you use still use your phone on terminals that don’t have NFC.
The phones will be coming out globally from April 10. Samsung Australia has confirmed that the phones will be arriving shortly, but announced no date.
