It’s been 23 years since Tom Cruise first accepted the role as Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible franchise, and he’s about to add to that total. Both Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie took to Twitter yesterday to announce their return for not one, but two more sequels to the hit franchise.

Cruise has starred in all six of the films so far, with the first one appearing in 1996. Throughout the franchise he’s been known to take bigger and bigger risks performing his own stunts, with several accidents along the way. McQuarrie on the other hand just joined the franchise for the last two films, Rogue Nation and Fallout.

McQuarrie took to Twitter yesterday with the quick note “Missions: Accepted#MissionImpossible” to show he’s in as both writer and director, while Cruise started promoting the sequels already, stating they would be released in 2021 and 2022. This means of course the two films will be made back to back, most likely beginning later this year. Before they come out though, Cruise and McQuarrie will also see another of their films hit theaters, Top Gun: Maverick.

The Mission: Impossible films have earned over $3.5 billion at the box office throughout its six films, and is one of the most successful film franchises of all time.
