Records are made to be broken, and last night La La Land proved the old adage true as it broke an almost forty year old tie between Midnight Express and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by winning 7 Golden Globe Awards. Not only did it break the record, but the film also won every award it was nominated for, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. What’s more, the film solidified itself as an early Oscar favourite.
It seemed like every other award that was handed out at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards was to La La Land. Along with it’s Best motion Picture award, the film won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Ryan Gosling), Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Emma Stone), Best Director (Damien Chazelle), Best Screenplay (Chazelle), Best Original Score (Justin Hurwitz) and Best Original Song (City of Stars). It’s not exactly a surprise that the film did so well, considering it had the most nominations of the night, and has been earning rave reviews ever since it opened.
The rest of the Golden Globes however did hold surprises. Moonlight trumped Manchester by the Sea for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Isabelle Huppert surprised by winning Best Actress – Drama over heavy favourites Natalie Portman and Amy Adams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Nocturnal Animals over Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali, and Billy Bob Thornton won Best Actor in a Television Series Drama over Mr. Robot Emmy-winner Rami Malek. TV mini-series The Night Manager also managed to pull of a surprise of its own by winning all three acting awards it was nomination for, including wins by Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston.
Even with all the surprises, it was still La La Land that had everyone talking. After all it’s not usual for the Hollywood Foreign Press to hand out more than 3 awards to a single film. The last film to accomplish the feat was 2009’s The Social Network when it won 4.
