Kenneth Branagh’s last foray into the world of Agatha Christie’s super slueth Hercule Poirot in 2017 was a huge hit, and it wasn’t much of a surprise that he’d be given the reigns for the sequel. Murder on the Orient Express was a success partially at least due to the large cast of A-List actors such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe, Lucy Boynton, and Daisy Ridley, and now we’re finding out that Death of the Nile will have just as as varied of a cast.

Branagh will once again be pulling double duty as the director and star of the film, and Tom Bateman will also return in the role of Bouc, but otherwise it’s an entirely new cast. Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders and Letitia Wright have all been announced. It’s once again a wide variety of stars who should attract all sorts of attention and bring in a wide variety of fans.

The synopsis of the film states that the film will follow “Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian adventure aboard a glamorous river steamer [as it] descends into a terrifying search for a murderer when an idyllic honeymoon is shattered by violent deaths. This sinister tale of obsessive love and its murderous consequences plays out in an epic landscape of danger and foreboding, with enough shocking twists and turns to leave audiences unsettled and guessing until the final, shocking denouement.”

With the news came a statement from Branagh that said “Crimes of passion are dangerously sexy. Agatha Christie has written a riveting story of emotional chaos and violent criminality and Michael Green has once again written a screenplay to match. With a cherished group of long-time artistic collaborators and a brilliant international cast, it is truly a pleasure to join Disney, Fox and Agatha Christie, Ltd. in bringing this daring thriller to the big screen. There are significant new twists, an awe-inspiring desert landscape and a chance to celebrate big screen entertainment in glorious 65 millimetre celluloid!”

Death on the Nile is set to start shooting soon, and will be released on October 9, 2020.
