While no official word has been given, it appears as if Johnny Depp’s time sailing the Caribbean as the pirate Jack Sparrow is over.

Disney Studios confirmed that they are planning a major reboot to the Pirates of Caribbean series that started in 2003. Through five movies Johnny Depp has starred as Captain Jack Sparrow, a pirate whose adventures took him to death’s door and back, and even earned him an Oscar nomination in 2004. While the series managed to carry on when Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley left after the third film, Depp stayed on board and even made personal appearances in character at Disneyland and to children’s hospitals.

Script writer Stuart Beattie said in an interview with DailyMailTV that “I think he’s had a great run. Obviously, he’s made that character his own and it’s become the character he’s most famous for now. And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think it’s been great for him, it’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it.”

Before playing Sparrow, Depp was famous for avoiding playing a character more than once, although he has gone on to do it since then, playing the Mad Hatter in two films, and will do so again when he stars in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel as Gellert Grindelwald. The Pirates series is also his most successful, and widest released films.

Depp has had a rough few years, facing domestic abuse allegations, financial troubles as well as a waning fan base.
