Over the last 25 years (which is when the Screen Actors Guild started handing out awards), the actors and actress who have received the best acting trophies at the SAG Awards have generally gone on to do the same at the Academy Awards. Out of the 25 awards handed out for each category, 20 lead actors have gone on to Oscar glory, and 18 lead actresses have done the same thing. These numbers bode well for Glenn Close and Rami Malek.
Last night at the SAG Awards Close and Malek went on to claim the top acting trophies for The Wife and Bohemian Rhapsody respectively. The duo also took home Golden Globes for the roles earlier in the month. Because of this, the odds are very good that they will need to have their Oscars acceptance speeches ready as well. Mahershala Ali followed up his Golden globe win with another Best Supporting Actor win on the night as well for his performance in Green Book. The cast of Black Panther and Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place) were also winners. It’s important to note that A Star Is Born was once again shut out of the major awards, and Oscar contender The Favourite didn’t win any of the three awards it was nominated for either.
While there are no sure bets when it comes to who wins come Academy Awards, the odds are continually looking good for Close and Malek. Even Ali has a good shot at winning now that he’s won two major awards.
