It’s typically at this time of the year that anticipation starts to build for the latest season of Game of Thrones, but unlike previous years we have to wait a little longer since an official premiere date beyond “Summer” has yet to be given. In true Game of Thrones fashion though, very little information about the upcoming season has been given at all. Yesterday though that changed somewhat, when HBO released the first official poster of the upcoming season.
The poster doesn’t show a lot, other than the hashtag GOTS7 and HBO’s logo, but the design of the poster itself tells us a lot. It teases the battle many are expecting the season to revolve around, fire vs ice. After all season 6 left off with the Night King’s army of wights arriving from beyond the wall and into Westeros, with Winter finally having come. Theirs isn’t the only army arriving however. Daenerys Targaryen is on her way across the sea with her dragons and army so she can claim her place on the Iron Throne.
The reason for the delay this year is that HBO had to wait to start filming the series until snow started to fall in their various filming locations. After all the series is supposed to be taking place in colder weather now. Since the series has now surpassed the books, fans have to wait for the show to finally air to find out what happens next. More information may come out in the following week though, as Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are set to take the stage with series stars Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams during SXSW.
