Ed Sheeran And Rihanna Are The Most Streamed Artists Of 2017

Spotify released their numbers for top streamed artists and songs for 2017, and Ed Sheeran is at the top of most of them. The 26 year old might not have gotten as much love as he should have when the Grammy Award nominations were released last week, but he’s proved himself regardless by being the most streamed artist of the year.

The top 5 streamed artists of 2017 are Ed Sheeran, followed by Drake, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and The Chainsmokers. The list is almost identical to the Most-Stream Male Artists list, except the Chainsmokers have been replace by Daddy Yankee. Sheeran’s Shape Of You was the most streamed track (with 1.4 billion of them), and his album ÷ was the top stream album with 3.1 billion streams. And in case you were wondering, Sheeran also holds another distinction, Spotify’s top streamed artist of all time, with over 47 million listeners.

In a released statement, Spotify’s chief content officer Stefan Blom said “There is no doubt that 2017 was The Year of Ed Sheeran, and we are thrilled that so many millions of music fans have discovered, listened to, and shared his music on Spotify. Congratulations to Ed on an amazing achievement.”

On the female side of things, Rihanna took the top spot, beating out Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Sia. Although in all fairness, Swift only returned her albums to Spotify in June, and her new album Reputation didn’t appear until December 1st. With no female artists appearing in the Most-Streamed Artists list, it further proves that the year was dominated by the men.
