Warner Bros. announced yesterday that the next Batman movie has been scheduled for a June 25, 2021 release date, and while Matt Reeves is still attached to the project as the writer and director, Ben Affleck is now officially out.
Affleck first played the caped crusader in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, before donning the cape and cowl for a cameo in Suicide Squad and eventually starring in 2017’s Justice League. Affleck’s performance in the role got mixed reviews, but he was still set to take on the role once more for a solo Batman film that he was set to write and direct. As time wore on though, he eventually dropped out of each of those roles, and is now no longer going to star in the film either. According to reports, the Warner Bros. film is now going to focus on a younger Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Affleck shows no ill will towards the project either, tweeting yesterday evening “Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see @MattReevesLA vision come to life.”
A search is currently underway for Affleck’s replacement, but no names have been released as to who they may be considering.
