Tip for Staying Safe in a Power Outage

, Tip for Staying Safe in a Power Outage, #Bizwhiznetwork.com Innovation ΛIOur reliance upon electricity – to keep our devices ticking, to keep food cold or frozen, to light our homes and offices and to maintain a hot water supply, among other things – grows with each passing day.  But power outages happen.  And they always seem to hit at the most inconvenient times (or maybe it’s simply that life without power is always inconvenient!).  Outages affect both homes and businesses, and at times, they can last for hours or even days. It’s imperative that you take safety precautions in the event of an outage. Take note of our tips, below, to keep everyone safe.

  1. Have a plan. Very few families actually sit down and talk about what they will do or where they will go in the event of a power outage or any other sort of emergency. Discuss with your children where they should meet if they need to leave the house in a crisis. If you’re concerned about the safety of your employees, make sure they’re aware of emergency procedures as well.
  2. Put a kit together. Include batteries of all sizes (include some extra power for your cellphone), flashlights, a battery-powered radio or TV and a small first aid kit. Part of your preparedness plan (see #1) is to ensure that everyone in your house or business knows where the kit is stored.
  3. Stockpile water. In the event of a natural disaster or a crisis where clean water isn’t readily available, you’ll need two liters of water per person, per day.
  4. Keep lots of blankets. If you lose power in winter months, you’ll need something to protect you from the cold and keep you warm. This is especially true if you have infants, small children or aging adults at home.
  5. Stay away from power lines. If you decide to venture outside, stay far away from downed power lines or anything touching them, such as fallen trees or other debris. Call the police to let them handle the potentially dangerous situation. And NEVER walk in standing water where power lines are down, as water is an electric conductor.
  6. Install emergency lighting. This is especially important in windowless offices. It’s inexpensive and will prevent accidents that can occur in the dark.
  7. Plug in. Surge protectors are a great investment, both at work and at home. Keep your computers plugged into surge protectors to protect them from crashes if you lose power.
