Prevent Hair Loss Post Pregnancy

Your bounty of joy brings along unquantifiable happiness in your life and inevitably becomes the centre of your attention. However, it also brings about severe changes in your body that you hardly pay any heed to. A saggy abdomen, pigmented skin, thinning hair or regular digestive problems are only a few of the health issues that keep gnawing at your existence after childbirth.

During pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen prolong the growing stage. There are fewer hairs in the resting stage and fewer falling out each day, so you have thicker, more luxuriant tresses.

After you give birth, your estrogen levels take a tumble and a lot more hair follicles enter the resting stage. Soon you’ll have more hair coming out in the shower or on the brush. This unusual shedding will taper off and your hair will be back to its pre-pregnancy thickness about six to 12 months after you give birth.

Since postpartum hair loss is a widely faced condition, one must take a closer view of the ways to prevent its occurrence:-

  1. Do not opt for a tight hairdo: Try to leave your hair at ease. A tight hairstyle such as a horsetail or a tight bun can actually make your hair come out loose. You should not turn or twist your hair much as this makes them more prone to breakage.
  2. Try to be careful about the kind of comb you use: The comb you use should have broadly spaced teeth. Closely spaced teeth of a comb will cause unnecessary friction while moving through your hair; this can aggravate hair loss.
  3. Always air dry wet hair: Heat has a bad effect on your soft hair. Hair is a delicate organ of your body and needs to be tended to with care. Since you are often in a hurry, you may use hair dryers to dry the wet shampooed locks. This can make the hair follicles weak over time. Air drying is the best solution.
  4. Fretting will make you lose more strands: Post pregnancy hair loss is a very common phenomenon. Once it occurs you feel extremely stressed as you are unaware about the ways to deal with it. Remind yourself it is only a temporary phase and will pass. Getting worked up will only make you lose more of those strands.
  5. Have a nutritious diet: After childbirth, a mother’s body becomes depleted of several nutrients. These nutrients must be provided to the person through her daily diet. A new mother’s diet should be a rich combination of protein, iron, flavonoids and antioxidants.
