Pests, especially in the warm weather, can ruin your holidays and stop you from hanging out at home or in your garden in peace. No one wants to feel those pesky little legs on their delicate skin—or, much to your chagrin, have them drop into your glass of juice or plate of food!

There are reliable power wasp removal services and other exterminators you can call on for assistance, but before going to the professionals, how about you try some of these incredible DIY solutions for pest control? All you’ll need to do is pool your household products, perhaps do a bit of mixing, and wait.

Dust Mite Repellent Spray

Dust mites tend to accumulate in areas where dust is likely to collect, such as under the carpet. To get rid of them, prepare a repellent spray with eucalyptus, clove, lavender, cinnamon or peppermint oil, mix it thoroughly with some water, and spray all the affected areas. Let it dry on its own, and the strong oil scent will keep the mites away! A more potent solution would include lemongrass and basil; this mixture will repel dust mites, lice and fleas.

Boiled Pepper Solution

This solution will work well in your garden when it comes to removing aphids and other annoying crawlers. Place six teaspoons of hot pepper powder (or 10 chopped-up peppers) into a container and add a gallon of water. Bring the mixture to a slow boil for at least 15 minutes, and then let it sit for 24 hours before straining it. Add two drops of oil so the solution won’t drip off your plants, and spray it evenly onto the affected areas.

Citrus Spray

If your home is crawling with spiders, a solution with a robust citrusy smell will deter them. Prepare a solution of lemon or lime juice with some water added, and transfer it to a spray bottle. With the contents of this bottle, wipe down your countertops, and then spray your windowsills, doors, and corners where the spiders may be hiding out. You can also put lemon, orange and lime peels in dark storage areas, as well as in your pantry and garden, to keep the spiders away.

Vinegar

If you have a serious problem with an ant infestation, then vinegar will come in handy. A 50 percent solution of vinegar will erase the paths and scents that ants use to communicate. Use it to wipe down all your kitchen surfaces, all your cupboards, your pantry and any other areas where ants might be hiding out. For optimum results, do this at least three times a day.

Basil and Rosemary Leaves

This combination will come in handy when you need to repel houseflies. Simply place the leaves in a shallow dish and leave it on a countertop, on a table, near the trash can or in any other place where flies are hovering about.

Catnip

To create a reliable, natural mosquito repellent, plant some catnip in your garden or apply some concentrated catnip oil to your skin.

Cider Vinegar Trap

This will create a lethal trap that’ll help you solve a fruit fly problem. Simply add some cider vinegar to a glass, filling it up to three-quarters of its height, and add about seven drops of dishwashing liquid; then, top the mixture up with warm water.

Minimize Your Use of Chemicals

There are many solutions for bug control that won’t leave your home virtually inhabitable or smelling like poison. In fact, the seven solutions above may make your house smell lovely and homey!
