PayPal to Let Users Shop and Pay Directly Within ChatGPT Next Year

PayPal announced on Tuesday that it will add its payment platform to ChatGPT starting in 2026 so that users can complete purchases directly in the chat. The company said it is adopting OpenAI’s open-source Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), which lets merchants make their products available within AI apps.
Launched in September, OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” tool allows users to confirm their order, shipping, and payment details and finish purchases without leaving ChatGPT. PayPal users will soon be able to pay through their digital wallets within the chat, while allegedly maintaining protection for both buyers and sellers. PayPal will also process card payments within ChatGPT using a separate payments API.
Products sold by PayPal merchants will appear via ChatGPT starting next year, beginning with categories like fashion, beauty, home improvement, and electronics. Sellers will not have to create any new integrations, as PayPal will manage routing and payments behind the scenes.
The company also plans to introduce an agentic commerce suite that lets merchants feature product catalogs within AI platforms, accept payments across various AI apps, and gain insights into customer behavior trends. The new suite is expected to help businesses reach more buyers directly inside AI-driven shopping experiences.
PayPal has been adding itself as a payments partner across multiple AI-powered commerce products, hoping to strengthen its role as people use AI tools for everyday shopping tasks.
