New Canadian Books To Read This Spring 2017

If you’re an avid reader and patriotic Canadian who is looking for the perfect read this season, you’re in luck. For Spring 2017, there are several new proudly Canuck books which are set to hit the shelves. Whether you’re eager to delve into poetry or the history of the True North, we’ve curated a few titles to add to your Canadian book collection this season.

Feel Happier in 9 Seconds by Linda Besner, Coach House: Written by poet Linda Besner, this latest volume hit the shelves on April 24. Centred around a theme of joy, her new poems explore the concept of finding happiness. Besner’s eccentric and unique book also touches upon the unusual topics of synaesthesia, ethics and economics.

What the Soul Doesn’t Want by Lorna Crozier, Freehand Books: Lorna Crozier explores the idea of aging in her book, which examines time passing and grief. The seasoned Canadian poet also uses creatures like cockroaches and flies as characters in her poems, along with human voices. What The Soul Doesn’t Want is released on May 15.

Escape from Wreck City by John Creary, Anvil Press: Calgary-based John Creary touches upon everything from relationships and travel to nature in Escape from Wreck City (which hits the shelves on May 15). The tome aims to describe the human experience, and all the adventures and interactions that go along with living.

Black Apple by Joan Crate, Simon Schuster: Author Joan Crate tells the tale of a young First Nations girl named Rose Marie, who is forced to attend the St. Mark’s Residential School for Girls in the Prairies. The story is set during the 1940s and 1950s, at a time when Aboriginal children were sadly forced to abandon their traditional way of living and move to residential schools. Black Apple is slated to hit the shelves on May 30.
