iOS 27 May Replace Core ML With New 'Core AI' Framework

Apple will reportedly introduce a new Core AI framework aimed at developers during its iOS 27 announcement at WWDC 2026. The framework is expected to replace the long‑running Core ML stack that Apple first introduced in 2017, per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who says Apple wants a more modern AI layer that supports its Apple Intelligence push and upcoming Siri upgrades across its devices.
Core AI is a modernized framework built for LLMs and generative AI rather than traditional machine learning. Third-party apps can connect more easily to both on-device and cloud-based models. The system chooses where to run tasks based on their performance and privacy requirements.
Sources indicate that Apple wants Core AI to better leverage the Apple Neural Engine and unified memory in recent Apple silicon chips to handle more demanding on-device AI tasks. Core AI will become the new default for AI features in apps once iOS 27 SDKs ship, even though Core ML apps should continue to work for some time.
Core AI is part of a broader plan for iOS 27, which looks to expand Apple Intelligence and Siri 2.0, and to integrate AI more deeply into both built-in and third-party apps. This strategy could mean that Apple wants to close the gap with rivals in generative AI and give developers a single, more flexible framework for building AI‑heavy experiences on its platforms.
