Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 isn’t just sleeker than previous models; it also boasts a major upgrade to its display’s durability. According to Samsung, the foldable display is rated for 500,000 folds—two and a half times the 200,000 folds offered by earlier models. After the brand reported that its new display remained fully functional after half a million folds, Bureau Veritas verified the rating by testing the Galaxy Z Fold7 at room temperature over 13 days.
With this change, Samsung says the new display can keep up with regular use for well over 10 years (almost 14, I did the math) if folded about 100 times daily, and for more than 6 years for users who fold the device 200 times per day. (Parts like the hinge may have their own durability limits, though the display is more likely to wear out first.) Previously, Samsung’s ratings translated to about five years of repeated folds for the average user. The company’s new figures go beyond the seven-year software update period it has promised for its smartphones.
The company says the improvement stems from quite a few alterations, such as 50% thicker glass, better impact absorption, and a new high-elastic adhesive applied to each OLED layer. This adhesive is said to provide over four times the recovery ability offered by earlier designs, according to 9to5Google.
