Dukan Diet Plan

Dieting is one thing, keeping the weight off is another obstacle. The Dukan diet for weight loss relies on high protein, low calorie foods for achieving rapid weight loss. While rapid weight loss is the motive behind this diet, the weight that you lose does not come back to you. Generally, it has been found that crash diets that allow you to lose weight quickly also pile up the lost pounds at the same rate.

The main purpose of this stage is to introduce good eating habits, while dealing with the usual diet hunger issues. For most people this is also the phase with the biggest weight loss as the time goes by your body will adjust to the new regime and lose weight at a more stable pace.

The Dukan diet is divided into four main phases, which are elaborated in this article. So, let us find out all about this diet plan in this article.

Attack Phase

This phase is characterized by rapid weight loss. Dieters can expect to lose a whopping 7 pounds in the first phase itself. However, the condition is that dieters are allowed to eat only lean protein foods, minus any carbs, fats etc. Fish, eggs, poultry, lean beef, pork and low/no fat dairy products form the core of this phase. Dieters can notice the difference after 4th day itself. During this period, dieters are prevented from eating vegetables, fruits or any carbohydrate rich foods. As a result, they may face constipation problems due to the lack of fiber. Fiber content can be added to the diet in the form of oat bran, which becomes a part of your diet for the rest of the program. The attack phase may last for 1 to 10 days, depending upon the desired weight loss goal.

Cruise Phase

Now, start to alternate the protein-heavy stage with the same diet plus any green or cooked vegetables—all you can eat. Go back and forth daily between the two, a move that Dukan claims helps to burn up a ton of calories. There’s no special breakdown of protein and veggies on the alternating days; just eat whichever you’re craving and in whatever combination you prefer. Stick to this stage until your target weight is reached, probably about five days for every pound you want to drop. It may sound like a drag, but Dukan swears that since you can eat as much as you want, satisfaction through quantity makes up for any lack of variety.

Consolidation Phase

The Consolidation phase is a somewhat relaxed phase of the diet, in which dieters are pretty much allowed to eat normal meals. However, portion size matters a great deal during this phase. Thus, dieters can choose to eat unlimited lean proteins and non starchy vegetables, but only a small amount of starchy vegetables and 1 serving of low sugar fruit. Besides, they can also eat 1 slice of whole grain bread, and a portion of hard cheese. Dieters are encouraged to take a 20 minute walk during this phase.

Stabilization Phase

As you can see, this diet is another fad diet, similar to the Atkins or South Beach diets. It comes under much scrutiny by nutrition professionals due to the many health hazards it presents. Restrictive diets that remove major food groups from our diets do nothing for us but deprive our bodies of necessary nutrients and calories. Other than presenting a nutrient deficiency, there are concerns about kidney problems and possible gall stones. Muscle loss is very common with calorie restrictive diets. Of course, a person will see weight loss, but only because she is reducing her daily caloric intake. Consequently, when a person loses weight too fast, she loses more than just fat. The body prefers carbohydrates for its fuel source, and it needs nutrients found in a healthy diet. For best results, combine proteins with whole grains, fruits vegetables, and low-fat dairy products. Eat well!!
