It’s beginning to look a lot like climate change. We know that’s not how the song goes, but with all the environmental damage that accompanies the holiday season – think pollution, trash, waste, and an ever-expanding carbon footprint, not to mention the impact on global warming – it’s important to do what we can to make the holidays as eco-friendly as possible (every little bit counts!). This winter, green-up your festivities with a few easy switches that will deliver a more sustainable Christmas season. Here are a few of our favorite tips for decking the halls with something eco!
Christmas Tree
It’s the focal point of your holiday decorations, so don’t choose a tree without first doing your research. While you may think that buying an artificial tree and using it year after year is the more eco-friendly option, a live tree is actually the greener choice. So nix the idea of a non-recyclable faux-fir and fill your abode with the sweet scent of an authentic evergreen.
Wreaths
This year, don’t make the mistake of purchasing a holiday wreath (both real and faux wreathes are poor choices) that will end up in the trash and eventually in a landfill. Instead, take a look around your house for some items to recycle and create your own DIY door decor. A few old neckties destined for the donation bin, leftover yarn and ribbon, backyard bits (like acorns, twigs and pinecones), cute cookie cutters, colorful buttons and pins and even leftover tree ornaments all make for great homemade wreath ingredients. Bring the children into the crafting and suddenly you have a fun, family-friendly activity, a tradition in the making and a wreath that can last for years to come.
Christmas Lights
If you turn off the indoor lights when you leave the room to save on energy, then why install power-sucking, decorative lights outside? Go the eco-friendly light route by choosing LEDs to add some twinkle to your eaves. LED bulbs last at least 16 times longer than cheaper incandescents, which means your purchase survives for many holidays to come and there are fewer light strings rotting away in landfills.
Gift Wrap
The holiday wrap and decorations you choose for gift adornment often make the package as exciting as what’s inside! Ditch the wasteful paper and plastic ribbons and pick up these creative alternatives for environmentally friendly holiday gift wrap.
