In December 2017, Mars and Jupiter can be seen quickly prior to dawn. In the 10 days from the conjunction on November 13(picture above this one )to this photo, Venus and Jupiter separated in the predawn sky. Venus sunk, and is still sinking, quickly toward the sun’s glare.Venus reached a turning point as the early morning “star “when it swung out to its greatest elongation from the sun on June 3, 2017. At this point, Venus was farthest from the sun on our sky’s dome, and a telescope showed Venus as half-illuminated in sunlight, like a first quarter moon. For the rest of the year, Venus will wax towards complete stage. Why a half Venus? Why a full Venus? It’s everything about the angle at which we see Venus with respect to the sun. When we see Venus to one side of the sun– as we did when it was at its biggest elongation in June– then we see it as half lit up. That is, we’re seeing half of Venus’ lighted half(a quarter Venus ). from earthly north. When Venus is to the east(left)of the Earth-sun line, we see Venus as an evening “star” in the west after sunset. After Venus reaches its inferior combination, Venus then relocates to the west( right)of the Earth-sun line, appearing as a morning “star “in the east prior to sunrise. The subsiding crescent moon helps to assist your eye to the moon and Jupiter on December 13, 14 and 15, which are around the peak early mornings of the Geminid meteor shower. Objective binoculars at Jupiter to see the star Zubenelgenubi and Jupiter in the very same binocularfield of view. Look carefully and you’ll see that Zubenelgenubi is a double star– two stars in one!Jupiter lights up predawn/dawn sky. Because Venus is practically obscured by the glare of dawn this month, the king world Jupiter

takes control of as the brightest starlike things to decorate the predawn sky. Look eastward for the most fantastic point of light soon prior to sunup.This month, Jupiter shines in front of the constellation Libra the Scales and near Libra’s alpha star, Zubenelgenubi. Use fantastic Jupiter to locate Zubenelgenubi , starting around the December solstice, a fictional line from Jupiter through Mars can assist direct your eye to Mercury’s location near the horizon. Look for Mercury over the daybreak point on the horizon as the predawn darkness starts to provide way to dawn. (See the sky chart above.)

Mercury and Saturn had a conjunction in the night sky on November 28, 2017, and will have another combination at night sky on December 6, 2017, which will be much more difficult to see. Bottom line: In December 2017, two of the five intense planets– Saturn and Mercury– nominally reign as evening planets in early December, but transition over to the morning sky by the end of the month. The other three brilliant worlds– Venus, Mars and Jupiter– are discovered in the early morning sky, before sunup.
