Google is expanding its AI Mode within Chrome by turning the desktop browser’s address bar into a full AI prompt box in version 145. In version 145, you’ll see a new “plus” icon on the left side of the address bar, which serves as the main entry point for AI actions.
When you click the plus button, Chrome opens a menu with options such as “Most recent tabs,” “Add image,” “Add file,” and “Tools.” The Tools section is the most interesting one, as it includes options for generating Nano Banana images or initiating a Deep Search—options you typically only see within Gemini. It also surfaces Gemini 3 model choices like Auto and Pro.
After you select an option, the address bar expands into a larger prompt box with hints such as “Ask anything,” “Describe your image,” or “Research anything.” A multicolored glow effect surrounding the field indicates that AI Mode is active. This interface supports longer, conversational queries instead of short search terms and encourages you to ask follow-up questions.
If you prefer the old Chrome layout, you can right-click the address bar and unselect “Always Show AI Mode Shortcuts” to hide the plus toggle, though the shortcuts themselves will remain in view.
