Diabetes is a disorder that leads to high levels of blood sugar or increased blood glucose levels. This disease is caused because of an insufficient secretion of insulin (a pancreatic hormone responsible for converting the sugar from the consumed food into energy) or the body cells do not properly respond to insulin. The first type is called Type 1 diabetes whereas the second set of causes indicates Type 2 diabetes. This insufficient insulin secretion causes glucose to accumulate in the bloodstream.

Symptoms-

Common symptoms include a sudden increase in the appetite along with persistent thirst, frequent urination (polyuria) and repeated instances of severe exhaustion and fatigue.

What can Chronic Diabetes do?

Chronic Diabetes can cause significant damage to the tissues of the eyes, nerves, kidneys and the heart. In many cases, Diabetes can be classified as a hereditary disorder.

In Ayurvedic parlance, Diabetes is known as Prameha. Ayurveda also classifies Diabetes as Maharoga as it affects almost every major body part and tissue. The Ayurvedic remedies aim to lower the blood sugar levels and subsequently restoring the bodily functions.

The Ayurvedic remedies for diabetes are as follows:

  1. Consuming a glass of ‘Amla’ juice with turmeric powder sprinkled on it, every day in the morning, is particularly effective to cure the eye tissues affected by diabetes.
  2. Herbal preparations made from the bark of the banyan tree can be consumed twice-a-day with a recommended dosage of about 40- 80ml.
  3. Consuming a teaspoon of the powder made from the dry leaves of Gymnema Sylvestre mixed with warm water is an effective remedy for diabetes.
  4. Dried fenugreek seeds in warm water can be consumed twice or thrice daily to hinder the further development of this disease.
  5. Drink a herbal preparation of the ‘Chirayata’ plant once you wake up in the morning to remedy the skin disorders caused due to diabetes.
