Windows 11 Struggles, Loses Market Share Again

Recent data from Statcounter reveals an unexpected trend in Microsoft Windows: Windows 11’s global desktop market share slightly declined in November while Windows 10’s saw gains. This comes just 10 months before Microsoft is set to end support for most editions of Windows 10.
Windows 11’s global desktop market share dropped from 35.6% in October to 34.9% in November, The Register reports, while Windows 10 increased its market share by nearly one percentage point to 61.8%. In the United States, Windows 11’s market share declined by 3.2% last month, from 39.8% to 36.6%, while Windows 10’s grew by 3.5% to 61.3%.
These statistics are big considering Microsoft’s recent push for Windows 11, including full-screen ads on Windows 10 to encourage upgrades.
Several factors may be contributing to this unexpected shift, such as the hardware compatibility issues with Windows 11, which has excluded many Windows 10 devices from upgrading.
User preference might have also played a big role, with some reports of users downgrading from Windows 11 back to Windows 10. And limited incentives for users to purchase new Windows 11-compatible hardware.
Statcounter’s data is not official; it is based on logging over five billion page views across 1.5 million global sites, providing a reliable indicator of market trends. Microsoft has not released official market share numbers.
