Microsoft Edge’s PDF reader, which began transitioning to Adobe’s tech in 2023, is about to receive improvements when running on low-end devices.
The current Adobe integration has led to performance issues, especially when handling large PDFs on systems with limited resources. Microsoft is actively working on addressing these concerns, as reported by Windows Latest.
A new feature flag called “msPdfOpenOnLowCoreDeviceWithDcPdfEnabled” has been spotted, suggesting that the upcoming PDF reader optimizations are on devices with limited processing power. This can reduce memory usage and improve the browsing for large PDFs on older PCs or those with limited RAM.
Another feature in development is “msPdfSharedLibraryTrigger,” which will allow the dynamic loading and unloading of shared libraries for PDF files. This will lead to better resource management and probably introduce new Adobe Cloud-powered PDF features.
Microsoft is also looking into AI and machine learning capabilities such as autofill improvements. AI/ML might be used to provide more intelligent suggestions for credit cards and addresses.
The complete removal of the current Edge PDF engine is now scheduled for no earlier than early 2025, as per Microsoft Tech Community. If things go as planned, the Adobe Acrobat PDF system will soon completely replace Edge’s native system.
