If you’re working with minimal space or just want a screen that doesn’t dominate a room, these are the deals you want. Measuring under 50 inches on the diagonal, they still deliver solid picture quality and brightness. This is also where the crazy cheap prices hang out—imagine paying under a hundred bucks for a flat screen just 10 years ago.
We like to open these roundups with an absurdly inexpensive screen just to show you the kind of price drops that are out there. Amazon’s Fire TVs are manufactured with an eye for value, and getting a 32″ TV for a little over a hundred bucks is a tough deal to beat. With 720p resolution, it won’t win any awards for picture quality, but it’s still bright and sharp enough for most video streaming under the Christopher Nolan threshold. This offer also includes a free six-month subscription to the MGM+ streaming service.
Amazon Fire 32″ Smart TV for $119.99 (list price $199.99)
For something a little bit larger and higher resolution but still affordable, this Vizio number is a huge bargain. The company is well-known for its budget-friendly displays that overdeliver on performance, and the D-Series follows through with bright, sharp colors, backlit screens, and intuitive onboard navigation. This TV has features that are definitely not standard, like AMD FreeSync for optimizing your gaming performance.
VIZIO 40″ D-Series Full HD 1080p Smart TV for $168.00 (list price $229.99)
At the very edge of the small screen bracket is this extremely capable 4K television from LG. This is the company’s entry-level OLED model, but you wouldn’t know it from the picture quality, which wows with deep blacks and vibrant colors. A wide viewing angle makes it excellent for large rooms, and it has low input lag for the gamers reading this. Getting it for $750 off is an incredible deal.
LG 48″ A2 Series OLED 4K UHD TV for $599.99 (list price $1299.99)
Need a little more size in your display? Midsize TVs, from 50″ to 70″, are where you can get the most bang for your buck. These are typically optimized for home theater use and come with advanced image processing, modern LED types like QLED, reduced glare, and other cool stuff. This month brought more price drops, so shop fast and shop hard.
$200 off is an unbeatable deal on this quantum LED screen with some nice bonus features. The Q series is a result of TCL splitting its display line into two halves, with the Qs on the higher end and the S series on the lower end. It’s designed for streaming HDR shows and movies, with access to numerous services through the built-in Google TV platform. Topping out at a refresh rate of 60Hz means it’s not perfect for next-gen gaming, but at this price who can complain?
TCL 65″ Q5 Series QLED 4K UHD Smart TV for $399.99 (list price $599.99)
Getting a 4K set over 55″ for under three hundred bucks is already a great deal, but carving off another $30 is the cherry on the sundae. This is a really nice Hisense display that would be perfect for a bedroom or second location, with impressive image quality and simple setup. The screen is a pure LCD/LED display with no fancy features like QLED, but it still delivers solid black levels and bright, accurate colors. Even though this TV is on sale for a budget price, it gives you way more than you pay for.
Hisense 58″ 4K UHD Smart TV for $268.00 (list price $298.00)
We’ve got a four-star Outstanding review of this TV from PCMag, which says that the TV has an “incredibly colorful and fairly bright picture, as well as some of the best gaming performance we’ve seen.” If input lag is a concern, this minimalist monitor has some of the lowest you’ll find in this price range. The OLED panel delivers great imagery, and the thin back panel has tons of ports, including four HDMI ports (all 4K120, one eARC), three USB ports, Ethernet, optical audio, and more. $500 is a sweet price drop.
LG 65″ C3 OLED TV for $1,599.99 (list price $2,099.99)
The Crystal series from Samsung are its entry-level models, and while they lack some of the fancier features of higher-end sets they make up for it with extremely reasonable prices. This 75″ display is right on the border of midsize, and it dominates a room with HDR imagery, a high native contrast ratio, and low blurring. The built-in Tizen Smart TV interface gives you seamless access to dozens of streaming apps, and sound quality is respectable.
Samsung 75″ TU690T Crystal UHD 4K Smart TV for $629.99 (list price $749.99)
At the top end of the TV market are these enormous displays, big enough to be used for spacious home theaters or man caves. These screens typically support 4K resolution with perfect color quality and brightness and have wide viewing angles for group enjoyment. Yes, the price tag is steep, but these discounts will take some of the sting off.
Walmart has a very attractive $150 price drop on this huge, bright, crisp screen. LG is one of the most reliable names in TVs, and this 4K model carries on that tradition. AI-powered brightness modification performs real-time image adjustment based on the ambient light of the room to reduce glare and present a strong picture every time. The built-in webOS streaming platform is versatile and easy to use, supporting multiple accounts for family members and instant access to Netflix, Hulu, and more.
LG 70″ 4K UHD Smart TV for $498.00 (list price $648.00)
This thing is absolutely enormous. Stretching almost a hundred inches on the diagonal, it pushes out 4K Ultra HD at a blistering 120Hz refresh rate. Direct LED backlighting means the image is strong even in light-saturated rooms, and colors are crisp and sharp. Dolby Virtual:X sound processing creates immersive 3D sound from the onboard speakers and subwoofer, and the built-in Chromecast lets you access your media with ease. Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are also supported. It also has the biggest discount on our list at $2,000 off!
TCL 98″ Class S5 S-Class LED 4K UHD HDR Smart TV for $2,999.99 (list price $4,999.99)
Shopping for a new display? Here are some important things to keep in mind.
Resolution keeps on rising, and as games and media push higher pixel rates, your TV will need to follow along. At this point, going for anything less than 4K on a midsize or large TV is a mistake. Full HD is typically fine for a smaller screen unless you’re going to be right up next to it, and 8K is probably not a good investment yet.
Consider external audio. Because screens are thinner and lighter than ever before, there’s less room in most modern TVs for good speakers. Investing in a soundbar is an inexpensive way to take advantage of the powerful multichannel audio that most media comes with these days.
Pay attention to the refresh rate. The base refresh rate—60Hz—is perfectly decent, but once you make the jump to 120Hz, you’ll never go back. It makes motion smoother and more impactful and removes blur and jitter—something prized in gaming on the latest consoles but less so for television viewing.
What is the difference between a $500 TV and a $2,000 TV?
If you browse the deals above, you probably notice a massive range in prices. The cheapest on the list came in under $100, and the most expensive has a base retail price of $5,000. Why wouldn’t you just buy 50 $100 sets and glue them together? The key difference is in the screen technology. Cheaper sets typically use basic LEDs for their displays, which are perfectly capable but suffer in direct light and have less vivid colors. More luxe models use OLED or Quantum LED, which ensures smoother transitions, more vibrant hues, and deeper blacks. That picture quality is going to be the main difference.
When are the best TV deals?
Although online retailers offer discounts throughout the year, there are three essential times for TV shopping. The first is in January or February, where the impending Super Bowl sends people to the stores to get a new screen for the big game. In the Spring, manufacturers typically release their new models, so you’ll find stores putting the older ones on sale to clear out inventory. And finally, Black Friday after Thanksgiving is dependably the best time for deals on just about everything, television sets included.
What is the difference between LED and OLED TVs?
LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, are a technology that has been around for decades. The image for a traditional LED screen is created by a transparent LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panel. An array of LED lights behind and around it provide the brightness. The more precise that array is, the more accurate the image will be. OLED or Organic LED screens allow the individual LED lights to serve as color and brightness-changing pixels. These sets typically pull more power and deliver deeper blacks but have slower refresh rates.
