SpaceX had another unplanned explosion during the latest launch attempt for its Starship rocket, sending fiery debris raining down across the Caribbean once again. Although the first-stage booster was successfully caught by the launch tower, SpaceX lost contact with the Starship itself just a few minutes into its launch. It was later confirmed to have exploded, marking the second major failure of the Starship program in 2025.
The Starship is SpaceX’s next-generation spacecraft, designed to offer a much heavier lifting vehicle for low-Earth-orbit missions, as well as enable farther-flung missions to the moon and even Mars in the future. While it has been successful in pioneering a new recovery method for its super-heavy first-stage booster, the Starship itself has struggled to return safely. Although SpaceX has had some success with Starship in the past, the two launches conducted in 2025 have both ended in early failure, raising questions about the accelerated development plans of the program.
This latest launch saw the rocket take off from SpaceX’s Boca Chica, Texas, launch facility at 6:30 Eastern Time. But just a few minutes later, SpaceX confirmed it had lost contact with the Starship upper stage. A video appeared shortly after on Twitter/X showing the moment of unplanned disassembly.
Many videos have since appeared online showing the Starship’s fiery debris streaking across the Caribbean. It seems almost certain that this will result in a repeat of the masses of detritus that washed up on various Caribbean islands after the last Starship explosion.
“Our team immediately began coordination with safety officials to implement pre-planned contingency responses,” SpaceX said in a statement via Sky. “We will review the data from today’s flight test to better understand root cause. As always, success comes from what we learn, and today’s flight will offer additional lessons to improve Starship’s reliability.”
Following the explosion, several flights were grounded, and there were delays at several Florida airports to allow potential space launch debris to clear from the skies.
SpaceX lost a Starship in January to a similarly unplanned explosion. At the time, it was thought to be an issue of oxygen and fuel leak into the cavity above the ship engine firewall. It’s not yet clear whether a similar issue was at fault for this latest explosion, although it did occur earlier in the flight, suggesting that it may be something else.
