Recent data from Canalys (via Android Central) has revealed some mind-boggling insights from India’s premium smartphone market for the first three quarters of 2024, with Google and OnePlus seeing contrasting differences.
Google Pixel has seen remarkable growth, with its market share in the premium segment increasing from 1% in 2023 to 5% in 2024. This is a 400% increase in market share year-over-year. The increase is due to the success of the Pixel 8 series, which is partly made in India, and the strong sales of the Pixel 9 series in the third quarter of 2024. I guess people are finally realizing how amazing stock Android feels, at least to me. Or maybe it is the cameras.
On the other hand, OnePlus faced a steep decline during the same time period. Its market share dropped from 21% in 2023 to just 6% in 2024, which means a 71% decrease. One of the main reasons for this big drop was the major retailer boycott that began on May 1, 2024, involving approximately 4,500 retailers across six states in southern and western India. Retailers stopped selling OnePlus products because of delays in processing warranties and low profit margins. Another reason, I imagine, could be the green line issue.
Samsung maintained a strong position with a 30% market share, experiencing modest growth partly due to the success of its Galaxy S24 series. At the same time, Apple continues to dominate the premium segment with a 56% market share.
The premium smartphone market in India, defined as devices over $500, shipped 6.5 million units between Q1 and Q3 2024. Android phones accounted for 44% of the premium market share, with Samsung grabbing a major chunk of Android’s share at 67%.
