At long last, AMD is about to unveil the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070. The chipmaker hasn’t revealed much since its announcement of its next-gen GPUs at CES 2025 in early January. But the company’s @amdradeon account recently posted a message on X bearing the tagline, “Make every play count.” You’ll be able to watch the unveiling yourself on YouTube on Feb. 28 at 8:00 EST. But while we wait, we have some performance numbers to chew on, courtesy of a possible leak, as Wccftech notes. Take the usual grain of salt and follow us down the rabbit hole.
The leaked info, possibly from AMD’s materials, purports to compare performance between the two RDNA 4 GPUs and AMD’s RX 7900 GRE. The GRE, which debuted in the US in February of last year, is a solid GPU for high-refresh, 1440p gaming. It has 16GB of memory and lands between the 7900 XT and the 7800 XT. AMD appeared to be targeting Nvidia’s 12GB RTX 4070, and both cards had MSRPs of $549 at the time the GRE launched.
Obviously, an RDNA 4 GPU is going to outshine an RDNA 3 card, but the length of that performance gap is impressive—assuming the information is real. Apparently, the AMD RX 9070 XT outperforms the RX 7900 GRE by 42% in 4K and 38% at 1440p. That’s not bad at all. And the non-XT model is no slouch either, offering 21% and 20% improvements over the GRE in 4K and 1440, respectively.
As Wccftech points out, one of the most important issues here is price. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, which is the competition for AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT, has an MSRP of $749. Reviews of the RTX 5070 Ti, which went on sale Feb. 20, are somewhat mixed, though our sister publication PCMag thinks its pros far outweigh its cons. If AMD gives the RX 9070 XT a decent MSRP and (importantly) if retailers are stocked up enough to keep actual prices near the MSRP, we could have some interesting competition going on.
According to VideoCardz, AMD’s RX 9070 XT and 9070 will likely go on sale on March 6, though that’s not official just yet. We expect to get the official word on Feb. 28, when AMD makes its announcement. At this point, AMD must being feeling the pressure to get its GPUs out and get the competition started with Nvidia in earnest.
