Summer is almost here, and new music is launching everywhere in hopes of taking the title of Song of the Summer. It’s an honour Katy Perry has held before, and one she could very well take hold of once more. Early this morning the Roar and Firework singer released her latest single, “Never Really Over”, and is sounds like it could be a huge hit for her.
In the Capitol Music press release for the single, they say the song “explores the nature of relationships.” Perry herself said “All of our relationships — from first love, through failed love, to great love — all become a part of you so that none are ever really over, and once you accept both the dark and the light, you may find that the darkness brought you to the light.”
The new single didn’t come as a surprise, after all Perry was teasing the video on Wednesday through social media. The video itself takes us back to the summer of love, as the singer and her dancers all wear 1970s-inspired clothing, but the music is very modern, and very much Perry.
The single was written by Perry and several others, including her recent collaborator Zedd, and is her first solo pop single since Hey Hey Hey was released last year. A new album is also rumoured to be on the way, which would be the 34-year old’s first since 2017’s Witness.
