Google is reportedly working on a new feature called the Compact Notification Shelf for Android 16,, which will declutter the lock screen and improve notification management.
The Compact Notification Shelf will let users collapse notifications into a small pill-shaped area below the clock on the lock screen. This feature preserves the visibility of the lock screen wallpaper, makes important notifications stand out, and provides a cleaner, less cluttered appearance.
If you ask me, this feature is still available in Android 15, but only on the always-on display screen. As soon as you turn off the screen, all the notifications line up in the same or similar position as the Compact Notification Shelf.
Users will be able to tap the collapsed notification pill to expand and view the full content of each notification.
It will come with two options:
Compact Option: Collapses new notifications into a shelf
Full List Option: Displays notifications in a complete list (current default)
The Compact Notification Shelf was discovered by Android Authority in Android 15 QPR2 Beta 3 but is currently hidden and not live in the build.
As Android 16 is still in development, these features may evolve before the final release. The update is expected to launch in mid-2025, but according to rumors, the first Android 16 beta build might be released later today.
