Apple May Launch Vision Pro 2 This Year

It looks like Apple will release its Vision Pro 2 later this year, but don’t expect the headset to lose any weight. The company is reportedly working on a lighter model for 2027, so customers who buy the Vision Pro 2 may have to settle for a revised head strap and a faster chip with better AI performance. One can hope that the price tag will be lower than the $3,500 for the original Vision Pro.
Recent reports suggested that Apple might stop working on the Vision Pro 2 in favor of the lighter (possibly cheaper) model. With the Vision Pro 2 now expected (though not confirmed by Apple) to appear this year, it seems that Apple has made enough progress to put out a new model. But unless there are more changes to the headset than the strap and chip, it seems like more of a refresh than a generational change.
As 9to5mac points out, the updated silicon for the Vision Pro 2 could be an M4 or an M5 chip, depending on who you ask. Either way, the headset will have improved performance, including with AI-related tasks. With Apple VisionOS 26 on the way, the updated chip makes sense; the newer hardware keeps the Vision Pro from seeming outdated.
The strap should reduce neck strain, but in the end, it’s just a strap. Apple must make the unit lighter to get customer buy-in, so the strap comes off as a stop-gap measure. Until Apple dramatically reduces the weight of the headset, new models probably won’t attract many buyers of the original Vision Pro. Unless, that is, the new strap is an engineering marvel, which, given Apple’s history, isn’t out of the question.
The headset that follows the Vision Pro 2, which is expected to be lighter and cheaper, could end up having a lower resolution than the Vision Pro 2. The resolution drop is seen as necessary to bring down the price. Interestingly, the display itself may end up being larger than the panel in the Vision Pro 2.
It’s worth mentioning that the 2027 date isn’t set in stone for Apple’s Vision Pro 2. A Bloomberg report notes that the timing could change between now and then. However, given the tariff uncertainty that has been hanging over manufacturers and retailers of late, you should probably assume flexible dates for most upcoming product launches.
