Microsoft has clarified its plans for the next major update to Windows, and it won’t be Windows 12. The company says the upcoming release is named Windows 11 version 25H2 and will become available in the second half of 2025. Microsoft has already made early preview builds available to Windows Insiders.
Windows 11 version 25H2 is not a big change from the current 24H2. Both versions use the same platform and servicing structure, so upgrading from 24H2 to 25H2 will be as simple as a quick restart, not like iOS 18 to iOS 26 or Android 15 to Android 16, much like installing a regular cumulative update.
At this stage, the preview build does not include any new or exclusive features, and its changelog is identical to the latest 24H2 preview in the Beta Channel. Microsoft says that new features will be gradually added to 25H2 and included in future updates for 24H2 and possibly 23H2, as reported by Tom’s Hardware.
The probable release window for 25H2 is September or October 2025, at the same time when Windows 10 support ends.
The update primarily focuses on improving UX by making the system more stable instead of making big changes.
