The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel And Game Of Thrones Top The Emmy Awards

Amazon has done what no streaming service has done before, win an Emmy award for Best Comedy for their show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. On the drama side of things it was a returning Game of Thrones that took the trophy once again, beating out last year’s winner The Handmaid’s Tale. All in all it was a night ruled by the two shows.

Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a sitcom about a 1950s homemaker who decides to give stand-up comedy a try after her home life starts to make her unhappy. The series won eight trophies altogether, including the aforementioned Best Comedy trophy, best actress honors for star Rachel Brosnahan, best supporting actress for Alex Borstein, and writing and directing trophies for the series creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino. Game of Thrones on the other hand won the most trophies of the night. Of their nine statues, they won Best Drama, and Best Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage. The series wasn’t nominated last year because with the summer premiere it didn’t qualify, allowing The Handmaid’s Tale to take its place.

The bigger surprises of the evening including The Crown’s Claire Foy beating out The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss and Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh. Matthew Rhys finally took home an acting trophy for The Americans, a series that has largely been passed over by the Emmy’s throughout its six, critically acclaimed seasons.  And after four decades of being on television, Henry Winkler finally took home an acting trophy for his role in Barry.
