Meet Googlebook, the New Gemini‑Powered, Android-Based Laptop Line That Will Succeed Chromebook

On Tuesday, Google announced the Googlebook, its new AI laptop line that succeeds a decade and a half of Chromebooks. The company positions Googlebook as a laptop line built around its Gemini intelligence system and an Android‑based OS. While existing Chromebooks will continue to receive updates, the Googlebook will sit above Chromebooks as a more premium option.
Googlebook uses an Android-based platform that combines regular desktop browsing with access to mobile apps. Gemini sits at the center of the experience, helping users across apps and web content. It also comes with a new “Magic Pointer” cursor that lets users summon Gemini directly within anything displayed onscreen.
Unlike its in-house Pixel phones, Google has announced hardware partners for Googlebooks, including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. These devices are to feature a dedicated glow bar on the lid. Users will be able to mirror phone apps on the laptop, access phone files from their desktop, and sync notifications across devices, much like iPhone and MacBook users can do within the Apple ecosystem.
The first Googlebooks will launch in fall 2026, and exact prices and hardware configurations will be decided by partner manufacturers. Will the new lineup be able to compete with the affordable and widely-loved MacBook Neo? Only time will tell.
