EcoHelmet Foldable Paper Cycling Helmet Wins James Dyson Award (video)

A very unique foldable paper cycling helmet Created and developed by Isis Shiffer, a graduate of the Pratt Institute of Design in New York, has this week won the prestigious James Dyson Award for design.

The lightweight paper EcoHelmet gets its strength from layers of recycled paper which are woven into a honeycomb structure, and can be easily folded flat for transportation and storage when not required.

Isis Shiffer the creator of the EcoHelmet explains a little more about its inspiration, construction and functionality. Shiffer hopes the EcoHelmet will be sold at bike-share stations for £4

“EcoHelmet has been through several stages of development to arrive at a design that both works and looks good,” said Shiffer. “Early prototypes worked, but looked like pineapples; intermediate prototypes looked great and fell apart.”

“The final, three-block design is fully functional and echoes the leather helmets of the 1970s,” she added. “It was important to me to keep the price as low as possible and the look as universally appealing as I could.”

The EcoHelmet website writes :

How can using bike share be a safer and less stressful experience? Almost ninety percent of bike share users don’t wear helmets, and nearly all report feeling unsafe on the road. EcoHelmet is an inexpensive folding helmet that can be purchased onsite and recycled when at the end of the ride.

Constructed from waterproofed recycled paper in a radial honeycomb pattern, EcoHelmet absorbs blows from any direction as effectively as traditional polystyrene. It folds flat for easy vending and fits most head sizes.
