Deets founders killed in crash

NORFOLK, Neb. — The founders of what is now Deets Homestore here died following a Dec. 21 traffic accident, according to local reports.

Martin Deets, 92, and Norma Deets, 82, were on U.S. Highway 81, when the Chrysler Martin Deets was driving turned into the northbound lane of traffic and struck the trailer of the semi, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

They were taken to a hospital but died from injuries sustained in the accident.

The couple founded Deets Furniture in 1961 in Madison, Neb. A second store opened in Norfolk in 1987, and eventually, the family consolidated operations to the new location. In 1997, Deets, now operated by son Ron Deets, moved to a new, 71,000-square-foot showroom on Highway 81 in Norfolk, according to the retailer’s website.

Services for Martin and Norma Deets were held Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison and burial was at Crown Hill Cemetery, also in Madison, the Norfolk Daily News reported.
