RED’s Hydrogen One handset is among those gadgets we’ll think when we really see it. The company’s been promising up the $1,200 smartphone for a while now, only to be hit with delays and straight-out confessing,”We have no concept whatsoever what we are doing.”
Consider this some little vote of confidence, nevertheless. AT&T announced today that it will be bring the 5.7-inch “holographic screen gadget.” That, naturally, shouldn’t be taken as an implied approval of the gadget, even a verification of that it does, in truth, exist.
In a press release tied to the statement, a market SVP states, “This revolutionary smartphone will offer you with substantial improvements in the way you develop and view content on the leading network for home entertainment.” Take that as you will. Personally, I’m holding back any sort of judgement up until I can hold the thing in my hands.
The provider discusses “later on this summertime” in the press release, which lines up with RED’s most current mention of an August launch date. As for cost, your guess is as excellent as ours. We connected to AT&T to see whether the company will be supporting the item on agreement, or simply using up the $1,200 phone as is through its retail channel. The provider will not discuss that, yet, though its Next aid strategy may make sense, cushioning the expense by extending it out over a longer duration.
The Hydrogen One is, by all accounts, about as far as you can get from a mainstream piece of mobile hardware. At the moment, it feels more like an enjoyable customer electronic devices thought experiment, but a minimum of it’s one that’s real– and concerning the second biggest mobile carrier in the U.S. at some time this summer.
Update: Appears like Verizon will be getting the phone, also. The provider (which, disclosure, owns the business that owns TechCrunch) will be getting the phone in the even more comprehensive timeframe of “later this year.” No word on prices there, either.
