Nosebleeds are a much more benign condition than they seem. Most anterior nosebleeds tend to have simple remedies which can be done by a family doctor or even at home. Anterior nosebleeds occur from the blood vessels in the front of the nose. Posterior nosebleeds are the other type of nosebleed which occur due to a problem with the arteries at the back of the nose. Posterior nosebleeds are much more serious for you and they usually need admission to the hospital and treatment by an ENT specialist known as an otolaryngologist. Here is everything you need to know about both types of nosebleeds…
Causes of Nosebleeds-
1. Trauma:
Both trauma to the outside of the nose as well as inside the nose such as repeatedly picking your nose can cause nosebleeds.
2. Underlying Disease:
Certain diseases and conditions make blood clotting difficult and this causes nosebleeds. These diseases include liver disease as well as conditions such as high blood pressure.
3. Medications:
Certain medications cause nosebleeds as well.
Symptoms-
The most common symptom of a nosebleed is simply when blood drips from the nose however there are some other symptoms which appear when the condition worsens…
1. Dizziness
2. Bleeding from other parts of the body
3. Easy bruising
4. Fainting
Treatment-
1. Cauterization of the Blood Vessel: Cauterization of a blood vessel is when part of the blood vessel is burned to stop it from bleeding more.
2. Nasal Packing: Nasal packing is when the bleeding is stopped by applying sterile tampons inside the nose. A nasal packing is the only way to stop a posterior nosebleed.
3. Sedatives and Pain Medications: A posterior nosebleed is much more uncomfortable and painful than an anterior nosebleed. Sedatives and pain medications will be given to help you cope with posterior nosebleeds.
