A Freak Fire Wrecked This Gamer’s RTX 4060 Ti

PC meltdowns are infrequent, but they’re certainly dramatic. A gamer posted a picture of their mangled Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti on Quasar Zone, saying that a fire broke out in their system while they were playing a game. The GPU seems to have taken the brunt of the damage, but there is no shortage of suspects when it comes down to which component started the fire. Given the trouble video cards sometimes have with connectors melting, we expected to see yet another example—but, as it turns out, this PC disaster seems to be something else.
The gamer mentioned that they play Battlegrounds, though it’s not clear if they were playing that or something else when the meltdown occurred. In any event, the computer shut down and smoke appeared, followed by flames, they said, as they scrambled to pull the power cord.
Later, they discovered the damage to the RTX 4060 Ti: a badly warped (and melted) backplate shows just how intense the heat had been. Much of the damage surrounds one of the screws at the back of the board. Interestingly, the power connector appears fine. Instead, it looks as though the fire started near the PCIe slot on the motherboard. But even that isn’t clear, unfortunately.
Community members on the Korean PC hardware site immediately started offering their thoughts on the culprit, zeroing in on the screw and speculating that it could have been over-torqued. They also expressed concern about the cooling fans on the GPU. And the gamer pointed out that the motherboard was a refurbished unit and was installed just a couple months ago. The gamer also had an inexpensive power supply that was listed as “avoid” by at least one tech website. Chances are, we’ll never know for sure which component failed, nor why.
Issues with Nvidia 40 series cards aren’t unheard of. We’ve seen our share of melted PC parts, particularly when it comes to GPUs, but the power connectors are usually where the meltdown occurs, which makes the case of this particular GPU so unusual.
As Wccftech notes, it’s worth your time—and money, and safety—to make sure all components in your PC build are quality. That’s not to say that expensive parts can’t melt, but you’re doing yourself a favor by putting some money into a high-quality PSU. It’s tempting to cheap out with this unsexy component, but you do so at your own risk.
